Treating Gum Disease in Tuscaloosa Patients

So here’s the scoop (just in case you haven’t read it in the news lately): Your gums could be making you sick. Really!

Gum disease is a serious problem – more than 85 percent of people have some level of periodontal or gum disease! Why is that so concerning?

Many people either skip or avoid their regular check-ups and cleanings thinking that when things hurt, they will go for treatment. The trouble with that thinking is that periodontal disease often presents with no symptoms at all until it is advanced enough to be adversely affecting the whole body.

How Gum Disease Affects Your Body

Gum disease can lead to systemic inflammation and ill health.

How? In a nutshell, the inflammatory effects from periodontal disease can cause bacterial byproducts to enter the bloodstream and trigger the liver to make proteins such as C-reactive protein. This protein is one of the main markers in all kinds of systemic inflammation. Inflammation like this can increase the risk of blood clots and, according to a study from Harvard, pancreatic cancer. In fact, the Harvard study shows that men with gum disease were 63 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer when compared to those with no periodontal problems.

In fact, periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, Pre-eclampsia and low birth weight babies, joint replacement failures and much more!

Complicated as that all may sound, it means one, simple thing – gum disease can ruin your health!

Though Riverview Dental Designs focuses on the prevention of periodontal disease, we can also treat it gently and effectively with our advanced gum disease therapy.
